Sweet Tradition Meets Modern Delight

Origin and Nutritional Highlights

Tanghulu, a beloved Northern Chinese dessert, traces its origins back to the Southern Song dynasty. Legend has it that Emperor Song Guangzong’s imperial concubine, Huang Guifei, recovered from an illness thanks to a unique remedy of hawthorn fruit coated with rock sugar. This method became popular, evolving into the delightful skewered treat we know today. Traditionally made with bamboo skewers, modern Tanghulu retains its charm while offering a sweet connection to Chinese culture.

Tanghulu offers more than just its sweet, glossy appeal. Depending on the fruits used, it can be a source of vitamin C and beneficial compounds like chlorogenic acid and quercetin. Chinese hawthorn, often used in Tanghulu, is believed to aid digestion and lower cholesterol, as noted in Chinese medicine. Enjoy Tanghulu as a delicious treat that merges tradition, flavor, and a touch of history!
